Read the passage: Hedgerow survey in Co. Meath
A class surveyed a hedgerow bordering a pasture field in Co. Meath. A 20 m line transect was laid at right angles to the hedge, running from the base of the hedge (0 m) into the field. At every 4 m a 1 m² quadrat was placed and the percentage cover of two plants was estimated. Light intensity was measured with a light meter and soil moisture with a moisture probe. Distance from hedge (m) | Light (lux) | Soil moisture (%) | Ivy cover (%) | Buttercup cover (%) 0 | 900 | 62 | 70 | 0 4 | 3200 | 48 | 20 | 10 8 | 8100 | 40 | 0 | 35 12 | 9800 | 36 | 0 | 40 16 | 10200 | 35 | 0 | 45 20 | 10100 | 34 | 0 | 40 In a separate investigation, the class set ten pitfall traps along the hedge base overnight and caught 46 ground beetles. They marked each beetle with a dot of non-toxic paint and released them. Two nights later they caught 40 ground beetles, of which 8 were marked.
