Read the passage: Ó Briain Fresh Foods, Castlebar
Ó Briain Fresh Foods Ltd makes ready-to-eat salads in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, and supplies supermarkets across Connacht. The company employs 60 people, most of whom are members of a trade union. In March, the union submitted a claim for a 6% pay increase, pointing to rising living costs. Management offered 2%, saying that energy and packaging costs had risen sharply. After two meetings the talks broke down and the union began balloting members on a work-to-rule. At the same time, the company's lettuce supplier, a local grower, warned that it would stop deliveries unless overdue invoices were paid within 14 days. Meanwhile a customer, Gráinne, complained that a salad bought in a Castlebar supermarket was past its use-by date on the day of purchase. The supermarket offered her a voucher; she wants a refund. Ó Briain Fresh Foods also signed a written contract with a Galway catering firm to supply 400 salads every Friday for a year, but the catering firm cancelled after two months without notice, leaving the company with unsold stock.
