Read the passage: Opinion: Give Us Back Our Bandstand
For forty years the bandstand in Market Square was the beating heart of our town. Brass bands played there on summer Sundays. Couples danced. Children chased pigeons around its iron legs. Today it stands behind a metal fence, its paint peeling, its roof sagging like a tired old horse. The council says repairs would cost too much. But what is the cost of doing nothing? A town without a gathering place is a town that slowly forgets itself. Some people argue that the money would be better spent on roads. Roads matter, of course. Yet nobody ever fell in love, made a friend or heard their first live music in a pothole. A recent survey by the Tidy Towns committee found that seven in ten residents would use a restored bandstand at least once a month. Local musicians have offered to play for free. Our TY class has already raised €900 through a bake sale. We are not asking the council to do it alone. We are asking it to work with us. Restore the bandstand. Restore our town's heart. Restore the music.
